day one

Well, the first day of my internship was today.  In all, I'll call it a success.  Lots of paperwork and training stuff, but it's that way with any new job and this internship is basically that.

The hour drive each way went well (thankfully no construction on my route, though I come very close!).

The other intern from my school is my age, has similar interests (she crochets and alters clothes, but knows how to quilt!), and though her interest is chemistry and mine microbiology, we've taken similar paths to get where we are today, so I think we'll get along well.

Everyone in the lab I met was friendly and the overall feeling was friendly and relaxed, though of course everyone knows their job is important, too.  That alone is a big relief!

But I'm tired!  I got up at 4:30am!  I'll be heading to bed very soon.

But I wanted to show off a little of what I did yesterday.  I decided to quilt the kids charity quilts and managed to do all 3 in about 2 hours, including prepping the machine, loading, unloading and actual quilting!  The hubby supervised, which suprized me, but I think he's truly curious about the whole process, even if he'd never admit it.

And I think I gave chain sewing a new definition...

I quilted the first quilt and rolled it and put the second one on and kept going!  The quilts take 1.5 yards of fabric and I bought 3.5 yards and didn't cut it - this was such a time saver.

I hope to find time to get binding on these soon, but I'm not holding my breath.  I plan to sew them down by machine entirely, so first I'll have to do some research into how best to do that.  Once they're done, I'll contact the charity, but for now I don't want to make any promises.

I also worked on the June UFO, so I'll try to get photos of that soon.

Time to go relax and snuggle kitties and then get a good night sleep because the hubby wants to go fishing again in the morning.

Happy quilting,
Katie

Glad your day went well; sounds interesting, but over my head for sure! The quilts look good, and you'll get the bindings on in plenty of time. Glad you figured out the "chain quilting" idea! That's great! Have fun this weekend so you'll be ready for next week! ---"Love"

Sounds like a good first day! It will get even better with time. Those quilts are so cute and chain quilting seems like it worked like a charm. Get a good nights sleep and go catch some fish. That sounds relaxing, too.

Every time you write about this internship, it sounds more and more like it was truly meant to be! Imagine finding a person of like mind and talent to be your intern buddy! Way too many "coincidences" if you ask me. Katie, you are so right where you should be. Leave the fear behind!

Glad the first day went so well and like "Love" said "way over my head". Your quilts look great. If you go fishing enjoy the day. Connie204

Hi Katie - Glad to hear that your first day went well. If you want a really quick binding method - try machine stitching the binding to the "back" first. Then fold it to the "front" and use a decorative stitch to stitch it down by machine. Try it on a scrap sandwich first - you'll see what I mean. (Just make sure that your bobbin thread blends in with the backing because it will show.) ^..^

Katie, glad the first day went well. Continued good luck with the internship.
The charity quilts look so cute, and how smart are you not to cut the backing and just keep rolling.
If you look on Pat Sloan's website, she has a video tutorial on bindings done all by machine.
